Student Success Stories

The instructors at Malcolm X and the training Toyia received set her up for success during her program and in her future career. Toyia felt supported every step of the journey. City Colleges’ partner One Million Degrees offered her personal, academic, and financial support during her education. She was also a Project MPACT recipient, which covered the costs of her tuition and provided stipends, job training, and professional skills development to help her get to work after graduation. “Malcolm X helped me build more confidence in myself,” she said. “The Medical Assisting program helped me realize I can overcome a lot of things.” Read Their Story TOYIA PARKER “The state-of-the-art equipment at Malcolm X helps to put you in that real-world healthcare environment,” Derek said. “Then, you get to apply the skills you’ve gained so they’re almost like second nature. People don’t realize the wide range of resources available at Malcolm X.” Derek feels this hands-on training not only prepares students for successful careers, but it also teaches them to be versatile, to think critically, to develop strong people skills, and to work with different personalities—all skills that come in handy for EMTs, paramedics, or firefighters. Malcolm X also prepared Derek by allowing him to focus on his schoolwork instead of how he would pay for his tuition. He received funding for his education through Project MPACT and HEERF. This program provides tuition, stipends, and job training for eligible students enrolled in certain programs at Malcolm X. “It was very helpful because it gave us the resources we need so we don’t have to worry about paying for the program,” Dawshierra said. “It helped prepare us for interviews.” Dawshierra dreams of completing the EMT program at Malcolm X College in 2024. Then, she hopes to find an EMT job that will allow her to travel. When the COVID pandemic hit, Shottees struggled academically, and she didn’t pass her CNA program. Project MPACT gave her the money she needed to try again. Without the program, she wasn’t sure how she’d pay for her courses a second time. That second chance allowed Shottees to successfully earn her CNA certification and secure jobs at a nursing home and a hospital. Next semester, she plans to go back to Malcolm X to become a licensed practical nurse. “It’s a great feeling and a great thing to know you’re part of a great college,” she said. Project MPACT provides workshops around career readiness and life skills.

In collaboration with Project MPACT, the IAAAM Malcolm X College male mentor group offered a series of workshops titled, “Unleash the Vision Within You.” This collection of workshops provided the essential skills and tools for students to identify their personal brand and maximize personal power. Students fine-tuned their critical thinking, accountability, networking, communication and conflict resolution skills.
